St. Cecilia (or Cecily), Virgin and Martyr,
was a patrician girl of Rome about the time of Bishop Urban. She is
reported to have sung to the Lord while the musicians played at her
wedding, hence she is generally known as the patron-saint of music. She
converted her husband St. Valerian and his brother St. Tiburtius to
Christianity as well as many others who endured the persecution of
Christians. St. Cecilia was martyred for her s success in inducing so many
to accept Christianity and refusing to renounce her faith. The date of
her martyrdom is variously reported from 177 to the middle of the forth
century. We celebrate her feast day on November 22. (Paraphrased from Butler's Lives of the Saints
On November 22, 1987, the Feast of St. Cecilia, the new statue of our
Patroness was blessed. This statue, which stands in front of the Church,
was the work of Holy Names' Sister Paula Turnbull and a gift of the
parish Women's Club.
