Sacred Heart Shelter is located near the Space Needle and the Pacific
Science Center in Seattle. It is the old convent connected with the
Sacred Heart Parish administered by the Redemptorist Fathers. Currently,
the Sacred Heart Shelter is part of Catholic Community Services and
Housing Authority Organization. It has been established as a home for the
homeless—mothers with children, fathers with children, and single women.
Usually we have 28 to 30 people living in Sacred Heart Shelter; one-half
of these are children less than 10 years. In 1979 a Board was established
to help with the volunteer efforts necessary to keep this outreach viable
for the needs of these families. Boyd Sharp was a member of the founding
board.
In June 1992, with some reorganization from Catholic Community
Services, it was felt that it was necessary to develop a Board
specifically to raise funds for Sacred Heart Shelter. Members of St.
Cecilia’s parish who are currently serving on this board are Boyd Sharp,
Scooty Kellogg , and Tom Gillespie.
Members of St. Cecilia’s who have chaired some fund-raising efforts
for Sacred Heart Shelter have been: Don Brotherton—Golf Tournament held
for the first time on July 19, 1995; Sue Theros (842-6597) and Sarah
Pelican (842-0665)—Christmas card sales. We also have a Soup luncheon
held at the Plymouth Congregational Church on the Friday before Good
Friday in Lent. Our Parish takes dinner to the shelter on the second
Sunday of the month
Funds raised provide for the housing and the administration of the
Sacred Heart Shelter where each family is given three months to find some
permanent job and/or housing. Sacred Heart Shelter has proven to have a
successful track record for helping others break the cycle of
homelessness. If you have further questions, please call Scooty Kellogg
(842-6109).
