Reading

Isaiah 45:1, 4-6
Thus says the LORD to his anointed, Cyrus, whose right hand I grasp, subduing nations before him, and making kings run in his service, opening doors before him and leaving the gates unbarred: For the sake of Jacob, my servant, of Israel, my chosen one, I have called you by your name, giving you a title, though you knew me not. I am the LORD and there is no other, there is no God besides me. It is I who arm you, though you know me not, so that toward the rising and the setting of the sun people may know that there is none besides me. I am the LORD, there is no other.

Gospel

Matthew 22:15-21
The Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech. They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone's opinion, for you do not regard a person's status. Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?" Knowing their malice, Jesus said, "Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax." Then they handed him the Roman coin.  He said to them, "Whose image is this and whose inscription?"  They replied, "Caesar's." At that he said to them, "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."

ADVICE FROM THE CHURCH MOUSE

As a mother delights in taking her child on her knees, in caressing and feeding him, so does our God delight in treating with love and tenderness those souls who give themselves entirely to Him, and place all their hopes in His goodness and bounty. -------St. Liguori

BAPTISM CLASS

There will be a baptism class on Wednesday October 26 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in Esterman Complex. For more information please call Sr. Anna, 842-3594 ext. 102.

SPIRITUALITY STUDY AND DISCUSSION GROUP

The next session of this informal study program on spirituality in everyday life will be Wednesday, October 19, 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in Esterman Hall.  The study is based on the book Reaching Jesus, by Father David Knight, and is intended to bring us, as a group of friends, to a deeper relationship with Jesus.  Books are $7.00 each, and will be available at the next session.  This program is so informal that you can stop in at any session (1st & 3rd Wednesdays through May), and simply pick up on the ideas being discussed, and hopefully add some of your own.  If you would like further information, please contact Pete Jancola, at 780-5813 or pjjancola@worldnet.att.net.

GOSPEL TRUTH FOR THE YOUTH

Suppose your mom wants you to go into soccer while your dad feels that swimming would be better for you.  How would you choose?  In today’s gospel, both the Pharisees and followers of Herod tried to trap Jesus by asking him if it was right that they should pay their taxes to Caesar.  If he said yes, then the religious would be upset. If he said no, then he could be arrested as a rebel.  But Jesus was clever.  He told them to take out the coin and look at it.  If the picture on the coin was Caesar’s, then they should give it to Caesar. And, they should give to God what belongs to God.  Jesus told them to make a decision that would be good for the people and not what they wanted.  So how do you make your decisions?  The first thing to do is to pray.  Ask God to help you show the way.  And with God’s help, you can reach an answer that will make everyone happy.

SAUSAGEFEST

Tickets for the October 29 Sausage Fest will be on sale after all Masses Saturday evening and Sunday morning, Oct. 22 and 23. Tickets will not be sold at the door. They will be available at the office on Friday 10/21.  $12 for adults, $7.00 for children, three and under are free.  For info call Pete Jancola at 780-5813.

IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY

Are you interested in participating in a small group "at home retreat", based on Ignatian spirituality? Commitment time includes meeting with 6-7 other people once/week for 1 hour, during the school year.  If you are interested but would like to hear more, please come to an information meeting this Tuesday October 18, 9:30-10:30 at 8800 New London Court.  Call Mary Corbin 842-2974 or Christine Farrell 842-1086 for details.

PARENT FORMATION AND DISCUSSION EVENINGS

Thursdays, 7:00-8:30 p.m., Conger Hall Presented by Carla Caldwell, M.Div., Principal, St. Cecilia School

October 20th:  “Deepening Our Prayer Lives as Catholics”  What is Catholic prayer?  Can we integrate elements of prayer traditions from other religions and call it Christian prayer?  How can families develop a prayer life together?  November 10th:  “Following Jesus as a Path to Genuine Happiness”

How can following the teachings of Jesus lead to a deep contentment and joy in life, regardless of circumstances?  How can Catholic education inspire people to live lives that create true happiness?  How can we assist our children in meeting the challenges of a culture that often promotes self-interest?

We will explore the “Four Levels of Happiness” as outlined in the book, Healing the Culture, by Robert Spitzer, S.J., President of Gonzaga University. All are invited.  Please RSVP to Carla Caldwell:  842-2017 or ccaldwell@saintcparish.org
