Can you believe it? There are people in the pews, perhaps next to you,
who have been in the parish for a year or more and do not know a single
soul! In Baptism we received our commission to spread the Good News. In
the Eucharist we become one in Christ with everyone in the church. For
starters, how about introducing yourself to the person next to you next
time you are in a pew, if you do not know his or her name, because you
are one in Christ with him or her. There are folk who would like to get
involved but don't know what organizations/ groups need members or how to
go about joining them.,/p>
What are the responsibilities of a mentor?
- Make phone and personal contact.
- Introduce new members to one or more key figures (parish council,
staff, "pillars of the Church").
- Share a bit of your knowledge of the parish and Island with them.
- Introduce them to a few of your Catholic friends on the Island.
Time involved? Up to you. No reports, no meetings to attend, just a
chance to be a friend. With inactive Catholics the second largest
"denomination" in the Northwest, we share a responsibility. Are they
inactive because we let them fall through the cracks? Will recent
arrivals to our parish who feel invisible continue to come? Everyone can
be a mentor. It's simple, not that time consuming and will strengthen the
sense of family and community within the parish. Here is your chance to
"reach out and touch someone". We are all called to be missionaries and
to help evangelize.
