The Bainbridge Island community would seem at first glance far removed
from the inner city and homelessness. Yet, Deacon Joseph Curtis, before
he retired from St. Cecilia, first gave conception to the idea of daytime
ministries like Matt Talbot Center and Lazarus Daytime Center that now
seem so common. They were anything but common fifteen years ago when the
first efforts were made. Another islander, Dick Abrams, helped get the
doors open for Matt Talbot some ten years ago. St. Cecilia's parish is
now closely identified with Matt Talbot, but there is also strong support
for Lazarus. There are several St. Cecilia parishioners active in
gathering clothing.
