Reading

Exodus 22:20-26
Thus says the LORD: "You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt. You shall not wrong any widow or orphan. If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry. My wrath will flare up, and I will kill you with the sword; then your own wives will be widows, and your children orphans. "If you lend money to one of your poor neighbors among my people, you shall not act like an extortioner toward him by demanding interest from him. If you take your neighbor's cloak as a pledge, you shall return it to him before sunset; for this cloak of his is the only covering he has for his body. What else has he to sleep in? If he cries out to me, I will hear him; for I am compassionate."

Gospel

Matthew 22:34-40
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law tested him by asking, "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?"  He said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."

GOSPEL TRUTH FOR THE YOUTH

What can you do to show others you love God?  That is what Jesus said you must do in today’s gospel.  That is the greatest thing you can do.  And how would you do it?  You put God first.  That means you go to church on Sunday.  It also means you respect his name and not use it in anger.  And what is the second greatest thing you can do?  Jesus tells us that we should love our neighbor as we love ourselves.  If we don’t love ourselves, it’s very hard to love others.  And how do we love ourselves?  By respecting who we are.  We don’t put ourselves or others down.  We believe that no matter how many mistakes we make, God will love us if we are truly sorry.  For, as the saying goes, God made us and he doesn’t make junk.   So go out and love because God loves us.

BAPTISM CLASS

There will be a baptism class on Wednesday October 26 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in Esterman Complex.  For more information please call Sr. Anna, 842-3594 ext. 102.

ADVICE FROM THE CHURCH MOUSE

A tree cannot grow without roots; a building cannot be raised without a foundation; every river must flow from a source. So the Christian life and virtues can neither exist nor flourish, nor become a source of life, unless they proceed from Faith. -----St. Augustine.

CLARIFICATION

A private Church function such as a Potluck does not require a Food Handler’s Permit.  If you have any questions please confer with Jim Willmann, Facilities Supervisor.

November 10th:  “Following Jesus as a Path to Genuine Happiness.”  How can following the teachings of Jesus lead to a deep contentment and joy in life, regardless of circumstances?  How can Catholic education inspire people to live lives that create true happiness?  How can we assist our children in meeting the challenges of a culture that often promotes self-interest?  We will explore the “Four Levels of Happiness” as outlined in the book, Healing the Culture, by Robert Spitzer, S.J., President of Gonzaga University. All are invited.  Please RSVP to Carla Caldwell:  842-2017 or ccaldwell@saintcparish.org

THANK YOU FROM ST. CECILIA CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Thank you for your support of St. Cecilia Catholic School's bake sale and coffee sale last weekend.  Together we raised almost $1,500 to send to Little Flower School in Mobile, Alabama!  They will use the money to give the students back some of the items they wish they had not lost in Hurricane Katrina, as well as help with tuition for families who lost everything in the devastation.  Thank you for living like St. Therese.  "The Little Flower" would be proud of you
